Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) as a flagship scheme, which aimed to provide clean cooking fuel like LPG to rural and underprivileged households, who were using traditional cooking fuels like wood, coal, cow dung etc. The use of traditional cooking fuels had a detrimental impact on the health of rural women as well as the environment.

The scheme was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh on 1 May 2016.

The target under the scheme was to provide 8 crore LPG connections to underprivileged households by March 2020.

On 7 September 2019, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India handed over 8 crore LPG connections in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.

With the provision of 8 crore LPG connections under this scheme, LPG coverage has increased from 62% on 1 May 2016 to 99.8% on 1 April 2021.

Under the Union Budget for the financial year 21-22, provision has been made for providing an additional 1 crore LPG connections under the PMUY scheme. In this phase, special facilities have been given to migrant families.
