Cyclone Ditwa Strengthens While Skirting TN–Puducherry Coast, Despite No Expected Landfall
Cyclone Ditwa, which was formed in the South Bay of Bengal, will not make landfall. That is, it will not hit the land anywhere. It will move out near the coast of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry. The sea in that area has been experiencing storm surges for the last two days. As the cyclone progresses, its strength is increasing. The risk of damage is increasing gradually.
The Meteorological Department had earlier said that Ditwa could hit the Tamil Nadu–Puducherry–South Andhra Pradesh coast by Sunday morning. But after the cyclone moved closer, its movement was re-monitored. In a new statement in the morning, the Meteorological Department said that Ditwa will not enter the land. It will move very close to the land and move along the sea. At present, its position is 90 km east-northeast of Karaikal in the southwest Bay of Bengal, 120 km northeast of Vedaranniyam, 130 km southeast of Puducherry, 170 km north-northeast of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, and 220 km southeast of Chennai.
The cyclone has moved at a speed of 7 km per hour in the last 6 hours. In the next 24 hours, the cyclone will move northwards parallel to the coast of North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry. The distance between the cyclone and the coast will be the shortest between Sunday afternoon and evening. It may come a maximum of 30 to 70 km close to the land.
Due to the influence of Ditwa, there is a strong wind in the sea. There has been a ban on fishermen for two days. Meteorological Department’s official Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the maximum speed of the storm can reach 70 to 80 kmph on the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast. The gusty wind speed can reach 90 kmph. However, after the change in the movement of the cyclone, there is a possibility of variation in the speed of the storm.
