Is Your Name on the 2002 Voter List? How to Check? What Happens If You Don’t Take Part in SIR

Is Your Name on the 2002 Voter List?

Whether in colleges, offices, or tea stalls, the only topic of discussion right now is SIR. Thousands of questions are on everyone’s minds. While there is concern about what might happen after SIR, many are wondering where to find the 2002 voter list and how to check their names. Who might be excluded? Here’s everything you need to know.

The Election Commission has already published the 2002 voter list on its official website. The list has been released according to the assembly constituencies that existed at that time. Voters can now easily check from home whether their names are on the list by matching their polling station details.

If a family member’s name is missing from the 2002 voter list and they fail to prove their Indian citizenship, their names might be excluded by the Commission. The names of deceased or ineligible voters will also be removed. In cases where the same person has two EPIC numbers (voter IDs) in different places, one of them will be deleted. The Commission states that even if fake voters forge any of the 11 accepted identity documents, they cannot show their parents’ names in the 2002 voter list, making it difficult for them to prove authenticity.

What Happens If You Don’t Take Part in SIR?

After SIR, the Election Commission will publish a new voter list for the 2026 Assembly Elections. Any voter who does not participate in SIR will not have their name included in the new voter list.

What Is SIR Mapping?

In 2002, the state had 4.58 crore voters. Over time, the number has increased to 7.65 crore. Based on this, the mapping process is being conducted. The 2002 and 2025 voter lists are being compared. Those whose names appear in both lists will be marked as “mapped.” These voters are identified, and the Election Commission is almost certain that their family members are Indian citizens. They won’t need to submit any separate documents to prove their citizenship.

How to Access the SIR List?

After the main process of SIR is completed, a draft list will be published within a month. If there are any mistakes or objections, they can be reviewed and corrected by the Commission. This same method was followed in Bihar, and West Bengal will follow similar rules.

Why Is SIR Needed?

Every year, the Election Commission revises the voter list — adding new voters while removing fake and deceased ones. However, the Commission believes that this process is not entirely error-free. Hence, a comprehensive revision process — the SIR — has been launched to ensure greater accuracy and transparency in the voter database.
